They cleared the land, raised livestock, and established their estates. Many of the descendants of these mid 18th-century settlers became prominent politicians and businessmen.
In the 1820s, the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company built the Lehigh Canal. This prompted people to sell their farmland and support the businesses along the water.
Two hundred years later, Walnutport is still a central transportation route along the canal and its surrounding railroads. Since 1910, the number of houses in the borough has grown from 150 to more than 900.
Home to 2,056 people, Walnutport sits in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. It’s about 70 miles northeast of Philadelphia and 100 miles west of New York City.
