Wind Gap History
Situated 752 feet above sea level in a gap in the Appalachian Mountains, Wind Gap has served as a natural passageway throughout history, first to Native Americans and later to the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. A still-standing stone house located in town was once a toll gate on the stagecoach route that ran between Scranton and Philadelphia. The arrival of the railroad in 1878 connected Wind Gap to the Slate Belt, fueling the town’s economy. Wind Gap officially became a borough in 1893.
The population of Wind Gap over the last decade has remained fairly stable at around 2,700. Approximately 1,200 households live within the city’s boundaries, which covers a land area of 1.36 square miles. The estimated median household income is $35,000, and the median home value is around $155,000.
Known as “The Gateway to the Poconos,” Wind Gap is a small borough in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Its central location offers easy access to the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton metropolitan region and to all the recreational activities available in the town’s natural surroundings.
