The area in which Nazareth was founded was once home to many Native American peoples, and as Moravian missionaries worked with these groups, settlements such as Nazareth were founded. This particular community traces its formal roots to 1740. The land belonged at one point to William Penn, who reportedly gave the land to his daughter. The colonial law of the time allowed for a payment of one red rose each June 24 to be required of Penn’s daughter if so desired by local officials. This is still recognized with the sale of red roses each June in the community.
